The multi-institutional partnership agenda of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University ahead of the tree-planting and Climate action summit to be held on Wednesday, 17th July 2024 continues to gather support as the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) throws weight behind the exercise.

In an acceptance letter addressed to the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, fnipr, signed by the Director General, Dr Joseph Onoja and sighted by the COOUNewS, the foundation praised the University Management for her proactive action towards environmental conservation. The message reads below;

“On behalf of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), I commend the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) for the great decision towards institutionalising environmental sustainability and high-impact climate change mitigation programmes in your university.”

“Kindly take this as acceptance of NCF to collaborate with COOU and Climate Action Africa (CAA) to organize the Tree Planting and Climate Action Summit themed Tree-mendous Action for a Sustainable Future, scheduled to take place on 17th July 2024 at COOU Igbariam.”

“The university’s 5-year Climate Action Roadmap with a promotional mantra of One Staff One Tree, One Student One Tree, to deliver one million (1,000,000) trees sounds quite exciting and aligns so much with one of the pillars of the NCF Strategic Action Plan (SAP).”

“To support this project and as a way of contributing to achieving COOU’s goals of environmental protection and climate action, NCF will assist with the following: 1. Donate tree seedlings when we have available seedlings. 2. Provide technical assistance and guidance on tree planting and maintenance. 3. Collaborate with COOU on future climate action programmes and projects. 4. The Business Development and Communications (BDC) department of NCF will work with COOU to get the staff and students to get more involved in environmental conservation.”

“I am also pleased to confirm my availability as the Keynote Speaker and Chief Planter for the Tree Planting and Climate Action Summit.”

Concluding, the NCF expressed readiness to collaborate with the university to work out the details of how to inspire the staff and students of COOU to become more engaged in environmental sustainability and nature conservation.

In a swift reaction, the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Omenugha, thanked the Management of NCF whom she described as partners-in-progress for their acceptance and commended them for their massive support noting that the impact of environmental conservation cannot be overemphasized. She emphasized that the upcoming exercise is just the beginning for the University as the Council and Management are now determined to make the University fit for a purpose as charged by the Governor of the State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo.
