Biography
Dr. Chukwunonso Sylvester Ekesiobi is a budding and passionate scholar, known for his unwavering commitment to scholarly excellence and profound contributions to the field of Economics. Dr. Ekesiobi holds a prestigious first-class degree in Economics from Anambra State University, now Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, where he made history as the first student to achieve this feat in the Department of Economics, COOU. He furthered his academic pursuits by obtaining a Master of Science degree in Public Sector Economics from the renowned University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he also attained a Doctorate degree in Energy and Policy Economics.
Currently, Dr. Ekesiobi serves as a dedicated Lecturer in the Department of Economics at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, where he imparts knowledge and fosters critical thinking among his students. Renowned for his dynamic teaching style and passion for academic excellence, he regularly inspires his students to strive for greatness and pursue scholarly endeavours with diligence and determination.
Dr. Ekesiobi is a prolific researcher, with a diverse portfolio of publications in reputable local and international journals. Since joining the services of COOU in 2010 as a graduate assistant in the Department of Economics, Dr. Ekesiobi has held several positions within the department, including serving as the Department of Economics Examination Officer for a combined period of nine years, overseeing examination processes, ensuring academic integrity and fairness, while also providing support and guidance to students and Department members alike.
At the faculty level, Dr. Ekesiobi served as the Faculty Examination Officer for six years, serving under three different Deans bringing several innovations to this office. Furthermore, Dr. Ekesiobi's selfless service extends beyond his department and faculty, as he actively engages in various university committees, contributing valuable insights and expertise to critical decision-making processes. He has served as member on various committees in the Faculty of the Social Sciences, COOU, and chaired numerous faculty committees, including the Faculty of Social Science Examination Committee, the Faculty of Social Science Matriculation Committee, Faculty Welfare Committee and the Faculty of Social Science Handbook Review Committee, demonstrating his versatility and capacity to lead diverse teams toward common goals.
At the University level, Dr. Ekesiobi's qualities extends to where he represented his faculty on important committees and task forces, like the Faculty of Social Science representative to the University Committee on Examination and Timetable, University Academic Standard and Quality Assurance Committee, COOU Strategic Plan Committee, COOU TETFUND Committee, University Exam and Timetable Committee, University Strategic Plan Committee, COOU TETFUND Institutional Based Research (IBR) Selection Committee, COOU Advisory Committee on Policy and Strategy, COOU 25 Years Anniversary Committee, COOU Carol and Annual Award Committee, among others. Recently, Dr. Ekesiobi was appointed the Associate Director of the COOU Research Management Office (RMO) and the Special Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor on Strategy and Policy Implementation, where he is tasked with aiding the current university management under the able stewardship of the Acting Vice-Chancellor (Prof Kate Azuka Omenugha, fnipr) to chart the course for the university's future development and excellence.
Dr. Ekesiobi's dedication to scholarly inquiry and pursuit of knowledge has been further amplified through his acquisition of research and travel grants from esteemed institutions and organizations. Notable among these are the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET – New York) research and travel grants to Zimbabwe and Rwanda. The Nigerian Tax Research Network (NTRN) and the Federal Internal Revenue Service (FIRS) research and travel grants providing opportunities for Dr. Ekesiobi to engage in tax policy research, attend workshops, and disseminate findings to key stakeholders. Dr. Ekesiobi's expertise in economics has also led to consultancy engagements with various organizations and institutions, including: the International Centre for Tax and Development (Brighton, United Kingdom), Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET, New York), the Nigerian Tax Research Network (NTRN), Energy Commission of Nigeria, Veritas University Abuja, Novena University, Anambra State Ministry of Education, Civil Rights Concern Advocacy Group among others.
Dr. Ekesiobi is a member of several esteemed academic and professional organizations, including the Nigeria Economic Society (NES), a prestigious organization dedicated to promoting economic research, education, and policy advocacy in Nigeria. Within the Nigeria Economic Society NES, he serves as the secretary of the Anambra State Chapter and the South-East Zone, where he plays a pivotal role in coordinating chapter activities, organizing events, and facilitating knowledge sharing among members. In NES he is also the Special Assistant of the NES President (Prof. Adeola Adenikinju) on Student Matters as well as the pioneer National Student Liaison Officer of NES. He also belongs to the Nigeria Association for Energy Economics (NAEE), International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE), African Econometric Society, The Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA), American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), Nigerian Tax Research Network (NTRN), African Tax Research Network, Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET), and Partnership for Economic Policy (Network Member). He actively participates in these organizations, contributing to scholarly discourse and fostering collaboration on a global scale.
In addition to his active involvement in the aforementioned organizations, Dr. Ekesiobi serves as a staff adviser to the Idemili Students Association (COOU Chapter) and as the convener of the Policy Analysis and Research Congress (PARC) at COOU, a youth-oriented policy-based think tank.
