UniOjukwu 106.1 FM Goes Live as Omenugha’s Vision Takes to the Airwaves

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) is set to make history with the official launch of UniOjukwu 106.1 FM, a campus and community radio station conceived and championed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, FNIPR, a distinguished Professor of Mass Communication. The launch, scheduled for tomorrow 30th January, 2026, marks another bold step in redefining the university as the Now University and of the Future, firmly rooted in innovation, relevance, and societal engagement.

The establishment of UniOjukwu 106.1 FM aligns seamlessly with the 3Vs of the Vice Chancellor’s administration—Values, Viability, and Visibility. As a values-driven institution, the radio station is designed to promote ethical communication, intellectual discourse, and cultural identity. In terms of viability, it serves as a practical training ground for students, especially those in Mass Communication and related disciplines, equipping them with industry-ready skills. On the visibility front, the station positions COOU more prominently on the media map, projecting the university’s voice beyond its campuses into the wider society.

Speaking to the vision behind the station, Prof. Omenugha has consistently emphasized her long-standing desire to give the university community a voice, particularly students. UniOjukwu 106.1 FM is therefore not just a broadcast platform, but a democratic space where ideas, creativity, debates, and aspirations can be freely expressed. It reflects her belief that a modern university must listen as much as it speaks, and must empower its students to shape narratives, not just consume them.

More than a campus radio, UniOjukwu 106.1 FM is strategically positioned as a bridge between the university and its host communities. Through educational programmes, civic engagement, cultural content, and development-focused discussions, the station will amplify community voices while reinforcing the university’s role as a driver of social transformation. This approach underscores the administration’s commitment to town-and-gown collaboration in solving real-world problems.

As UniOjukwu 106.1 FM goes on air, it stands as a powerful symbol of Prof. Omenugha’s forward-thinking leadership, one that blends scholarship with innovation and vision with impact. The radio station reinforces COOU’s identity as a university that is not only responding to the demands of today, but deliberately shaping the future through inclusive communication, student empowerment, and strategic visibility.
