On Wednesday, July 16th, 2025, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), held its maiden matriculation ceremony for students of the newly introduced Professional Diploma in Herbal Medicine and Nutrition. The historic event took place at the University’s ETF building and featured the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, as the Guest Speaker.
In his welcome remarks, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Theophine Akunne, highlighted the uniqueness of the event, noting that although the Faculty was the last to be accredited this academic year, it became the first in Anambra State to launch a structured academic programme in Herbal Medicine and to successfully matriculate students into the field.
Addressing the matriculants, Deputy Governor Ibezim emphasized that while launching an initiative is commendable, the key to sustainability lies in structure, standardization, and strategic vision. He urged stakeholders to ensure that Herbal Medicine in Nigeria is developed into a globally competitive and exportable brand. The Deputy Governor also extended his appreciation to the family of the late Prof. Ogonna, to Prof. Akunne, and to the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, fnipr , for their unwavering commitment in bringing the programme to life.
In her remarks, Prof. Omenugha reiterated her full support for the growth of Herbal Medicine in the University. Sharing a personal testimony, she remarked: “I have a herb I use to reduce my blood sugar,” reinforcing her belief in the practical relevance of indigenous medicinal knowledge. She warmly welcomed the Deputy Governor, recognizing his passionate contributions to the field—contributions that earned him the revered title “Ezedibia.”
Prof. Omenugha joined the Deputy Governor in congratulating the matriculating students, encouraging them to embrace their academic journey as pioneers in a field that holds immense promise for healthcare and innovation. She described COOU as “the Now University and the University of the Future.”
Importantly, COOU is proud to be the first university in Southeast Nigeria to establish a Professional Diploma in Herbal Medicine and Nutrition—marking yet another bold step in redefining health sciences education in Nigeria.
Congratulations to our trailblazing students!
