On the occasion of World Theatre Day, the Department of Theatre Arts at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University joined hands with counterparts globally to honor their craft on March 27th, 2023, themed around “Theatre, Peace, and Human Development.”

This year’s celebration took a unique form at the university, with the department showcasing a plethora of plays, dramas, dances, and more under the leadership of Dr. Tony Nnalue, the Head of Department.

For students, Theatre Arts Day signifies a moment to delve into the essence of theatre beyond mere performances, exploring its reflection of societal intricacies. It serves as a reminder of the art’s profound impact on humanity, shedding light on its role in education, social commentary, and problem-solving.

Professor Charles Nwadigwe, speaking to COOUNewS, emphasized the celebration’s focus on acknowledging theatre’s significance in societal and human development. He stressed theatre’s capacity to communicate, educate, and advocate for change, stressing its role in fostering a culture of peace.

Mr. Edochie Obiajulu Peter, Anambra State Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Art Practitioners, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing theatre’s ability to mirror life and promote peace within communities and nations. He commended the university’s Department of Theatre Arts for its dedication and underscored the importance of supporting such initiatives, donating instruments to further enhance their endeavors. He also praised the university’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, fnipr, for her visionary leadership in uplifting the institution.
