Saturday, May 24, 2025, etched itself into the hearts and minds of many, marking a significant milestone for Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Anambra State. The university’s Combined Convocation Ceremony was not merely an event; it was a jubilant celebration of achievement, community, and resilience.
This momentous occasion drew an enthusiastic crowd from all corners, including the esteemed Visitor of the University and Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, who joined his wife, Dr. Nonye Soludo, to receive an Honoris Causa in Food Science and Nutrition. Also present was the Honourable Minister of State Foreign Affairs, Amb. Barr. Iyom Bianca Ojukwu who is also a Member of the University’s Governing Council, Traditional Rulers in Anambra State, etc.

More than 750 graduates, holding degrees from Doctor of Philosophy to Master of Science and Postgraduate Diplomas, walked across the stage – a dream realized after a long lull caused by the absence of a Governing Council over the past five years. The joy on their faces reflected not only their hard work and dedication but also the collective spirit of perseverance that defined the day.

The gathering, hailed as the largest in the university’s history, showcased the crème de la crème of society. Other notable Nigerians who were Honored alongside the Wife of the Governor were the traditional ruler of Ogidi Kingdom, HRM Igwe Pharm Dr. Alex Onyido, High Chief Christopher Ndubuisi (MD/CEO of Pinnatech Group), Chief Dozie Mbanefo (MD/CEO of New Crystal Communication Ltd), Lady Ada Chukwudozie (Board Chair of Keystone Bank Plc), and Chief Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Okonkwo (MD/CEO of Ekulo Group of Companies). These prestigious Honors will forever be remembered as Jubilee Honorary Doctorates Awardees.
In an address that resonated deeply with the over 20,000 attendees – including students, graduates, families, and well-wishers, Governor Soludo expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Council, Management, Senate, staff, and students for orchestrating such a spectacular event. He praised Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, commending her leadership qualities and urging the Governing Council to swiftly finalize the appointment of a permanent Vice-Chancellor by the end of June 2025.

The Governor emphasized the importance of collaboration between the university and its host communities, recognizing that the true essence of progress comes from shared goals and mutual support. He also celebrated the Honoris Causa recipients, including his wife, Dr. Nonye Soludo, encouraging them to continue their impactful contributions to society, which are vital for collective advancement.
With this grand celebration, COOU has not only marked a historic day but has also ignited a renewed sense of hope and purpose within the academic community and beyond.
