COOU STAFF ALONGSIDE OTHER RESEARCH TEAMS, WINS TETFUND’S RESEARCH FOR IMPACT $250,000.00 GRANT

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academics, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Anambra State, Prof. Osita Chiaghanam, is among the research teams that won the Tetfund’s Research for Impact (R4I) Initiative in Abuja.

According to exclusive reports from COOUNewS, a groundbreaking collaboration has been formed between the Research for Impact Initiative (R41) by Tertiary Education Trust Fund Tetfund and Innov8 Hub. As a result of this exciting partnership, four outstanding teams have been awarded a remarkable grant totalling $250,000 from the esteemed Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI).

The selection process for these teams was rigorous, with a strong emphasis placed on their ability to address pressing societal challenges, potential for commercialization, inclusivity, and socioeconomic impact. It is truly inspiring to witness these teams embarking on a journey to create sustainable ventures while tackling issues that affect our communities.

SGCI, under the support of esteemed funders like the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, IDRC-CRDI Canada, National Research Foundation, SIDA, and DFG, aims to empower Science Granting Councils (SGCs) across Sub-Saharan Africa. The African Centre for Technology Studies (Kenya), the Association of African Universities (Ghana), and Université Cheikh Anta Diop are leading the implementation of this noble initiative to enhance national research and innovation ecosystems.

The significant grant announcement took place at an elaborate inauguration and boot camp event in Abuja, on the distinguished Monday of June 24th, 2024. Driven by the belief in the importance of local solutions, TETFund’s Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, ably represented by Dr. Girei Bakari, emphasized the crucial role of homegrown innovations.

Reacting to the development, the Ag. Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha excitedly congratulated Prof. Chiaghanam and encouraged other academic staff to strive for excellence noting that research grants are indeed the way to go and the University will offer any assistance to anyone if needed at any time.

Congratulations to COOU!
