Prof. Osita Chiaghanam is a distinguished geologist who embarked on his academic career at what was then Anambra State University, now known as Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, in 2003 as a Lecturer II. He earned his B.Sc in Geological Sciences in 1996, followed by an M.Sc in Petroleum Geology in 2000, and later completed his Ph.D. in Sequence Stratigraphy/Sedimentology in 2007, all from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Prof. Chiaghanam’s expertise and commitment to his field led to his promotion to the rank of Professor of Geology in 2015.
Throughout his tenure at the university, Prof. Chiaghanam has held various leadership roles, demonstrating his dedication to both academia and administrative responsibilities. He served as the Assistant Coordinator for Pre-Science from 2008 to 2009, Head of the Department of Geology from 2009 to 2012, and Dean of Student Affairs from 2012 to 2013. His leadership continued to evolve as he assumed roles such as Coordinator for Pre-Degree Science from 2013 to 2014, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences from 2018 to 2021, and currently serves as the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic since 2021.
In addition to his administrative roles, Prof. Chiaghanam is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (MNMGS), Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (MNAPE), and Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG). His research interests primarily focus on Sequence Stratigraphy and the Hydrocarbon potentials of the Anambra/Niger Delta Basins, contributing significantly to the field of geology and petroleum exploration.
