In a significant stride toward advancing climate research and education, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has installed a modern weather station at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University’s Igbariam Campus. The facility, strategically located beside the Administrative Block, was completed after a meticulous two-day installation process by NIMET personnel.

Present at the installation were the Dean of Physical Sciences, Prof. K.K. Nwozor, the Director of Physical Planning, Arch. Okpala Peter, and the SA-VC on Strategy & Policy Implementation, Dr. Chukwunonso Ekesiobi.

Speaking to COOUNews, Mr. Christian Anayo Njoku, a NIMET representative and metrologist, highlighted the transformative potential of the weather station. He stated, the facility will play a critical role in enhancing research and education at COOU. It will provide accurate weather data, which is essential for climate studies, agricultural planning, and environmental management. Students and researchers now have access to real-time data that can be used for academic projects and practical learning. When asked about the parameters monitored, Mr. Anayo explained, that the station is equipped to measure temperature, humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, and precipitation. These parameters are vital for understanding weather patterns, predicting climate trends, and supporting local farmers with precise agricultural advice.

Discussing the choice of location, Mr. Anayo noted, that the site was carefully selected to ensure optimal data collection, taking into account minimal obstruction and maximum exposure to natural elements. Maintenance measures include regular calibration, training of personnel, and collaboration with the university’s technical team to ensure its longevity.

Prof. K.K. Nwozor, speaking on the university’s plans for collaboration, emphasized the alignment of the weather station’s potential with the 3Vs—Values, Viability, and Visibility—championed by the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha. He remarked,

_“…This installation enhances the value we bring to education and research, providing students and faculty with tools for innovative projects. Its viability lies in the real-time data it offers, which can be used in multidisciplinary studies, including agriculture, environmental science, and engineering. The station also elevates our visibility as a hub for cutting-edge research, attracting collaborations and funding opportunities…”_

Prof. Nwozor further revealed plans to involve students and faculty in data analysis and training programs facilitated by NIMET, ensuring skills development and practical knowledge application.

At the conclusion of the installation on Sunday 8th of December, Prof. Nwozor received the key to the station on behalf of the university, signifying the institution’s commitment to maximizing the facility’s potential for academic and societal impact.
