Departmental Information for Postgraduate Programme

In general, the programme aims at providing a solid foundation for those who wish to specialize in professional/academic philosophy. It also aims at bridging the gap between professional, academic philosophy and social practice in Nigeria in particular and African in general. Furthermore, it aims at exposing the students to African’s contribution to global philosophy and also other philosophies and thereby shows the relevance of philosophy to life.

In particular, the objective of the programme is, in the main, to prepare and equip the students with intellectual maturity for administrative, policy-making and mass media career, teaching positions in the public service, private sector and educational institutions.

 Requirements for the Programme

M.A. Degree programme

  1. Graduates of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, or of other approved

Universities who have obtained a single honors degree in philosophy or a combined honors degree with any of the Department in the faculty of Arts and the social science, with at least Second Class Honor or its equivalent or

  1. Candidates who hold qualification other than above, which are acceptable to senate are admitted to this programme.

Mode of Study for the Programme

M.A. Degree Programme

Candidates may pursue their course of study by; a combination of research work with course work; and in addition to the above candidates shall each present a seminar and the compulsory courses prescribed for all MA students.

Duration of the Programmes

M.A. Degree programme

A full-time M.A programme shall run for a minimum of three semesters and a maximum of four semesters; A part-time M.A programme shall run for a minimum of six semesters and for a maximum of eight semesters.

The candidates for M.A. degree programme must complete 3 prescribed courses of 3 credit units each; a seminar of 3 credit units; 4 optional courses with 3 credit units each not more than 2 courses from each semester from the candidates area of specialization; and Dissertation of 9 units making a total of 27 units.
