COOU’S PIONEER NURSING STUDENTS WRITE FINAL PAPER, SET TO MAKE HISTORY

For everything that begins, there must be an end, but some endings are the beginning of a legacy. Yesterday, being 2nd of September, 2026, the Department of Nursing Science, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), witnessed a historic and emotional moment as its pioneer set of students wrote their final paper, marking the end of a remarkable academic journey that began with the establishment of the programme. For these students, it was more than an examination; it was the culmination of years of lectures, clinical training, examinations, challenges, friendships and sacrifices in a department they helped build from the beginning.

As they prepare for their final defence, these students are on the verge of becoming the first graduates of Nursing Science from COOU. They will forever hold a unique place in the history of the University as the pioneers who took the first steps when the programme was still new, endured the uncertainties that often accompany pioneering academic programmes, and stayed the course until this defining moment. Their achievement is therefore not only personal but a significant milestone for the Department and the University, providing a foundation upon which generations of Nursing students will build.

The milestone is also a reflection of the vision and purposeful leadership driving Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University under the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, FNIPR. Through the administration’s commitment to the University's 3Vs — Values, Viability and Visibility, COOU continues to strengthen its academic programmes, develop its human capacity and create opportunities that position the institution as the Now University and of the Future. The emergence of the first graduating class of Nursing Science is one more evidence of a vision steadily becoming reality.

For the pioneer students, therefore, yesterday was not simply the day they wrote their last paper; it was the day they crossed a significant bridge from students to professionals-in-waiting. Soon, after their defence and completion of the necessary academic processes, they will proudly become graduates of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University and carry with them a distinction that no other set can claim: they were the first. Their names will remain part of the history of Nursing Science at COOU, reminding future generations that every great journey begins with a first step and they were the ones who took it.
