Prof. Omenugha Challenges Private Sector to Partner Universities in Solving Industry Problems

The Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, FNIPR, has challenged private sector operators to deepen their partnerships with universities by identifying industry challenges and supporting the development of practical solutions through research, training and innovation.

Prof. Omenugha made the call on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, during her keynote address at an event organised by the Importers Association of Nigeria (IMAN) at the Hollywood Event Centre, Awka. She emphasized that stronger engagement between businesses and academic institutions would help bridge the gap between university knowledge and workplace requirements.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, industries possess valuable practical experience, while universities contribute academic knowledge and research capabilities. She stressed that bringing these strengths together would create opportunities to develop skilled graduates, improve productivity and promote innovation.

Prof. Omenugha encouraged private sector stakeholders to communicate their operational challenges to universities and participate in curriculum development and professional training. She noted that identifying industry problems and allowing students and researchers to work toward solving them could produce innovations with practical and commercial value.

She cited the development of a Centre for Business and Enterprise at COOU through collaboration with a benefactor as an example of the possibilities that arise when industry and academia work together. The Vice-Chancellor urged businesses to see universities as strategic partners in developing human capital, strengthening enterprise and advancing economic growth.
