Prof. Omenugha Sets Sights on Top 10 National, Top 1,000 Global Ranking for COOU

She came into office and found a university with no visible presence on any global ranking platform. She intends to leave it firmly on the map. The Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, has set a bold and unambiguous target: before the end of her tenure, COOU will rank among the top 10 public universities in Nigeria and within the top 1,000 universities in the world.

Prof. Omenugha made this declaration on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, while addressing journalists at a press conference held at the Vice-Chancellor's Conference Room, as part of activities marking the commencement of the university's 16th Convocation Week. The announcement was not made tentatively, it was made with the conviction of a leader who has already begun laying the groundwork.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, COOU had no measurable ranking presence prior to her assumption of office, a gap she identified early and immediately set about closing. Since taking over, her administration has pursued deliberate, structured reforms aimed at strengthening the university's profile across the key indicators that determine global academic standing: teaching quality, research output, institutional reputation, infrastructure, and visibility. "I want, before I leave office, for COOU to be ranked among the top 10 public universities in Nigeria and among the first 1,000 in the world," she stated.

Prof. Kate Omenugha expressed confidence that the target is not aspirational fantasy but an achievable milestone, provided the university sustains its current momentum. She noted that the institution is already gaining recognition, a fact she attributed to the collective commitment of staff, students, and the broader COOU community to the administration's reform agenda.

Prof. Omenugha reaffirmed that the ranking ambition aligns directly with her administration's 3Vs trajectory — Values, Viability, and Visibility and that every initiative undertaken under her watch is calibrated to move the institution closer to its goal of becoming a university of undeniable national and global consequence.
