UniOjukwu 106.1FM Reopens in Grand Style as COOU Celebrates Prof. Omenugha’s Birthday

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) witnessed a historic and colourful celebration on Friday, 30th January 2026, as the long-awaited reopening of UniOjukwu 106.1FM Radio Station coincided with the joyful commemoration of the Vice-Chancellor’s birthday. The event, held at the Department of Mass Communication, Igbariam Campus, marked the official return of the University’s broadcast voice and reinforced the administration’s commitment to academic innovation and practical learning.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, FNIPR, was warmly received by enthusiastic students and staff of the department, led by the Head of Department, Dr. Gideon Nwafor. Amid cheers and excitement, Prof. Omenugha thrilled the audience by showcasing her vibrant dance steps alongside students as she made her way into the venue, setting a lively and celebratory tone for the day.

The ceremony attracted a distinguished gathering of university leaders and stakeholders, including the three Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Prof. Anselm Nweke (DVC Administration and Environmental Sustainability), Prof. Obiora Ejiofor (DVC Academics), and Prof. Sylvia Okonkwo (DVC Uli campus and Development affairs) as well as the Registrar, Sir Chris Obi, Ag. Bursar Dr. Nath Udezo, University Ag. Librarian Dr Uche Enweani, and the University PRO, Dr. Harrison Madubueze. Also present was the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, and the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Anthony Agu, among other senior officers and guests.

In his welcome address, the Head of Department, Dr. Gideon Nwafor, expressed profound appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for her unwavering support and visionary leadership, which made the revival of UniOjukwu 106.1FM possible. He commended her passion for the Mass Communication Department and noted that it was a great honour for the department to be the first to host the Vice-Chancellor and her husband in such a landmark event. He attributed the successful restoration of the station entirely to her love for the profession and her commitment to practical education.

Delivering her opening remarks, Prof. Omenugha expressed deep joy and gratitude for the milestone achievement. She appreciated the principal officers for their steadfast support and specially praised Dr. Nwafor for his resilience and ability to deliver results under pressure. The Vice-Chancellor noted that she would add him to her list of outstanding individuals who can be trusted with major responsibilities. Addressing the students, she encouraged them to maximize the opportunities provided by the radio station, develop their talents, and handle the equipment with utmost care and professionalism.

The event took an emotional turn as students and staff of the department celebrated the Vice-Chancellor with birthday songs, a beautifully decorated cake, and special gifts presented by the Mass Communication Department under the leadership of Dr. Nwafor. In a show of solidarity, the Department of Public Administration also joined in the celebration, as their staff and students, led by their Head of Department Prof. Egodike, presented additional gifts to the Vice-Chancellor.

The high point of the occasion was the official reopening of the UniOjukwu 106.1FM studio, where Prof. Omenugha went live on air to address the University community and the listening public. Her broadcast symbolized the full restoration of the station and its readiness to serve as a platform for learning, engagement, and community interaction.

The reopening of UniOjukwu 106.1FM represents a major step forward in COOU’s quest for academic excellence, practical training, and institutional visibility. It stands as a testament to Prof. Omenugha’s passion for communication and her dedication to empowering students with industry-relevant skills.
