In a landmark stride towards advancing community-based research and strengthening academic–health sector collaboration, the Department of Anatomy, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Anambra State Tuberculosis Control Programme (ANSTBLCP).
As part of this partnership, ANSTBLCP generously provided the department with a brand-new high-capacity microscope for testing presumptive and follow-up TB cases in both children and adults. In addition, the department also received face masks, laboratory kits, and other essential materials to aid research and practical training.
Briefing the Vice Chancellor on the development, the Head of Department of Anatomy, Dr. Stanley Elemuo, described the MoU as a game-changer that will reposition the department and enhance its viability—one of the three strategic “3Vs” of the current administration. He commended the inspiration and vision of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, which, according to him, motivated him to explore innovative ways of strengthening the department. Dr. Elemuo expressed gratitude to the State Ministry of Health for their overwhelming response and support, noting that such collaboration was unexpected but deeply appreciated.
In her remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha applauded Dr. Elemuo for leveraging his social capital and taking bold steps to seek opportunities for the growth of his department. She emphasized that the partnership is an evidence to the kind of community-focused research that the University is committed to advancing. According to her, with this state-of-the-art microscope, the Department of Anatomy is now better positioned to not only enrich students’ training but also contribute meaningfully to solving pressing health challenges within the Ụli community and beyond.
Prof. Omenugha further highlighted that such collaborations embody the vision of her administration—building a university that is Viable, Visible, and Valuable. She urged other departments and units across the institution to emulate this model of partnership and innovation. Importantly, she noted that the microscope, reputedly the first of its kind among universities in the South-East, will significantly strengthen the department’s preparedness ahead of its next accreditation exercise.
