A Journey Marked by Milestones

The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences began its journey by admitting its first set of medical students in 2003. However, challenges arose, leading to the suspension of the medical program in 2007 due to a lack of facilities and accreditation. Despite this setback, the faculty demonstrated resilience by establishing BSc. programs for Anatomy and Physiology the same year, ensuring that the admitted medical students could continue their education.

In 2008, the faculty marked a significant milestone with the re-establishment of the MBBS program, spearheaded by Prof. F.C. Akpuaka, who joined COOU on sabbatical. This revival of the medical program paved the way for the faculty to gain approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Medical Council in 2012 to accept the second batch of MBBS students. The faculty’s commitment to academic excellence was further demonstrated in 2009, with the graduation of its pioneer Anatomy and Physiology students and the subsequent establishment of a Postgraduate Program.
